Window Glass Repair and Replacement FAQs
Yes, and that is exactly what we specialize in. A Window Glass Repair and Replacement is all most situations call for because the window frame is still perfectly fine. The glass is the only part that is cracked, broken, or damaged. Replacing the entire window when only the glass has failed is unnecessary and expensive. At Advanced Window & Glass Repair, we remove the damaged glass from your existing frame and install a new pane that matches the original specifications. This works for single pane windows, double pane windows, tempered glass, and most standard residential and commercial window types found across Northern Virginia, Arlington, Fairfax, and the wider DMV area. You keep your existing frame, your existing trim, and you save a significant amount compared to a full window replacement. The only time we recommend replacing the full window is when the frame itself is rotted, warped, or structurally compromised, and our technician will tell you that upfront during the assessment.
The cost depends on the type of glass, the size of the pane, and whether it is a single pane or double pane unit. A single pane glass replacement on a standard residential window is on the lower end, while a double pane insulated glass unit replacement costs more because the sealed unit has to be custom fabricated to fit your frame. Tempered glass and specialty glass like low-E coated panels also cost more than standard annealed glass. At Advanced Window & Glass Repair, we provide phone quotes so you get a realistic price range before we come out. Once our technician is on site, you get a flat-rate quote with no hidden fees. The price you are quoted is the price you pay. That applies whether you are in Woodbridge, Silver Spring, Burke, Arlington, or anywhere else across the DMV.
Most standard window glass repairs are completed in a single visit, usually within one to two hours once the technician is on site. A straightforward single pane replacement can be done in under an hour. Double pane insulated glass units sometimes require the glass to be custom ordered to match the exact dimensions and specifications of your window, which can add a few business days for fabrication before the installation visit. Emergency situations like a break-in, storm damage, or a shattered window are handled the same day whenever possible. We offer 24/7 emergency window glass repair across Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC, so if your window breaks at night or on a weekend, you are not waiting until Monday morning for help.
That depends on the condition of the frame, not the age of the glass. If your window frame is still solid, operates smoothly, and is not showing signs of rot or warping, then repairing or replacing just the glass makes far more sense financially. A glass-only replacement costs a fraction of what a full window replacement runs, and it restores the window’s function, appearance, and energy efficiency without tearing into your wall or trim. Many homes across Arlington, Fairfax, McLean, and Falls Church have older windows with solid wood or aluminum frames that have decades of life left in them. Replacing the entire window in those cases is paying for work that is not needed. Our technicians assess the full window during every service call and give you an honest recommendation based on the actual condition, not a sales target.
It depends on how the damage happened. If the glass broke due to a covered event like a storm, vandalism, a break-in, or an accident, most homeowner insurance policies will cover the repair or replacement minus your deductible. Damage from normal wear and tear, aging seals, or gradual deterioration is typically not covered. We recommend calling your insurance provider first to confirm coverage, then scheduling a service call with us. Advanced Window & Glass Repair works with homeowners across Virginia and Maryland on insurance-related glass repairs regularly, and our technicians can document the damage on site if your insurer requires photos or a written description of the repair performed.
Other than broken glass, there are some other reasons why you may find it necessary to be replacing glass in your patio doors. Poor installation, damage to the patio glass door frame as well as weather related damage can put through a very difficult, complicated and costly process.
If you need glass replaced on your exterior doors, contact Advanced Window & Glass Repair, LLC to save more money in the long run. Call Now (571) 351-3692.

Foggy Window Glass Repair and IGU Replacement FAQs
Foggy windows happen when the seal around a double pane or triple pane insulated glass unit fails. That seal is what keeps the air or gas between the panes dry and insulated. Once it breaks down, outside moisture seeps into the space between the glass and creates that cloudy, hazy look that you cannot wipe away from either side. The fog is trapped inside the sealed unit. This is one of the most common window problems homeowners across Woodbridge, Silver Spring, Burke, and the rest of the DMV deal with, especially on windows that are ten years or older. The good news is you do not need to replace the entire window. A Foggy Window Glass Repair is all it takes. At Advanced Window & Glass Repair, we remove the failed insulated glass unit from your existing frame and install a brand new IGU with a fresh seal. Your frame stays, your trim stays, and the fog is gone.
An IGU stands for insulated glass unit. It is the sealed assembly of two or three panes of glass with a spacer bar and a gas fill, usually argon, between them. That sealed space is what gives double pane windows their insulation and energy efficiency. When the seal fails and moisture gets in, some companies offer a defogging service that drills a small hole in the glass to let the moisture escape. The problem is that defogging does not restore the insulating gas, does not fix the broken seal, and the fog almost always comes back within months. Replacing the full IGU gives you a brand new sealed unit with fresh gas fill and a proper seal that actually restores the window’s thermal performance. That is why we recommend IGU replacement over defogging for homeowners across Virginia, Maryland, and DC who want a lasting fix rather than a temporary patch.
The cost varies depending on the size of the glass unit, the number of panes, and whether specialty coatings like low-E glass are involved. A standard double pane IGU replacement for a typical residential window runs significantly less than replacing the entire window, which is the whole point of our repair-first approach. Low-E coated IGUs and triple pane units cost more because of the materials and fabrication involved. We provide phone quotes so you have a price range before scheduling a visit. On site, our technician measures the exact unit, confirms the specifications, and gives you a flat-rate quote. No surprises, no add-ons. That pricing is consistent whether your home is in Woodbridge, Arlington, Burke, Silver Spring, or anywhere across the DMV service area.
The actual installation usually takes about one to two hours per window once the technician arrives with the new unit. However, IGUs are custom fabricated to match the exact measurements of your window, so there is a lead time of several business days between the initial measurement visit and the installation visit. During the measurement appointment, our technician takes precise dimensions, confirms the glass type and any coatings, and orders the replacement unit. Once it arrives, we schedule the installation at a time that works for you. Someone does need to be home or at the property to give the technician access. For homeowners across Burke, Arlington, Fairfax, and the surrounding areas, we schedule installation windows that fit your availability so you are not waiting around all day.
Absolutely. A failed IGU seal means the insulating gas between the panes has escaped and been replaced by regular air and moisture. That drops the window’s thermal performance significantly, which means your HVAC system works harder to maintain temperature, especially during Northern Virginia and Maryland summers and winters. Replacing the failed IGU restores the argon gas fill and the sealed air space that originally made the window energy efficient. You will notice less condensation, more consistent indoor temperatures near the windows, and your heating and cooling system will not have to compensate for the heat transfer through those failed units. For homes across the DMV with multiple foggy windows, replacing the IGUs across the house can make a noticeable difference in monthly energy costs without the expense of full window replacement.
Window Balance and Spring Repair FAQs
The clearest sign is a window that will not stay open on its own. You lift it up and it immediately slides back down, or it slams shut the moment you let go. That means the balance or spring mechanism that counterweights the sash has failed and is no longer holding the weight of the glass. Other signs include a window that feels unusually heavy when you try to lift it, one side moving faster than the other causing the sash to tilt or bind in the frame, rattling or grinding noises when the window moves, or a sash that is completely stuck and will not budge in either direction. These are all symptoms of a worn out or broken window balance. It is one of the most common window problems in homes across Northern Virginia, Maryland, and DC, especially in houses built in the 1990s and 2000s where the original balances have reached the end of their cycle life.
A window balance is the hardware mechanism inside the window frame that holds the sash in place and allows it to slide up and down smoothly. Think of it as a counterweight system. The balance uses a spring, a coiled mechanism, or a block and tackle pulley to offset the weight of the glass so the window stays wherever you position it. Without a functioning balance, the sash has nothing holding it up against gravity. There are several types of window balances including spiral balances, block and tackle balances, constant force balances, and channel balances. The type your window uses depends on the manufacturer, the window style, and when it was built. Our technicians at Advanced Window & Glass Repair identify the correct balance type during the service call and carry the most common replacements on the truck for same-visit repairs across Woodbridge, Arlington, Burke, Silver Spring, and the broader DMV area.
In some cases, a spiral balance just needs a tension adjustment rather than a full replacement. If the spring still has life in it but has lost some tension, a technician can re-tension the coil and restore the window’s function without swapping the part. However, if the balance is physically broken, the spring has snapped, or the internal mechanism has worn past the point of adjustment, then a full replacement is the only fix. You cannot repair a broken spring inside a balance. The good news is that replacing a window balance is a straightforward repair that does not require removing the window from the wall or replacing the entire window unit. Our technicians handle window balance and spring repair across Virginia, Maryland, and DC daily, and most replacements are completed in under an hour per window.
Yes, and the reasoning is the same as replacing both springs on a garage door. Both balances are the same age, the same material, and have gone through the same number of open and close cycles. When one fails, the other is very close behind. Replacing only the broken one means the window will have one new balance and one worn balance, which causes uneven movement and puts extra stress on the new part. Replacing both at the same time keeps the sash balanced, gives both sides a fresh start, and prevents a second service call in a few weeks or months when the other one gives out. The additional cost to replace both during the same visit is minimal compared to scheduling and paying for a separate trip. This applies to homes across the entire DMV area, from Woodbridge and Burke to Arlington and Silver Spring.
The cost depends on the type of balance your window uses, the brand and model of the window, and how many windows need service. Some balance types are more common and readily available, which keeps the cost lower. Others are specific to certain manufacturers and may need to be ordered, which can add a small lead time but usually does not affect the repair price significantly. At Advanced Window & Glass Repair, we provide a flat-rate quote on site after our technician identifies the exact balance type and confirms the repair needed. There are no hourly charges and no surprise fees. Whether you have one window that will not stay up or a whole house full of slamming sashes across Fairfax, Annandale, Springfield, or Bethesda, you know the price before any work begins.
Door Glass Repair FAQs
We handle all types of door glass repair across the DMV area. That includes sliding door glass repair, patio door glass repair, French door glass repair, storefront door glass repair, entry door glass repair, and commercial door glass replacement. Whether it is a single cracked pane in a back patio door in Woodbridge or a shattered storefront door in Arlington, we repair or replace the glass without replacing the entire door unit. The frame, hardware, and door structure stay intact as long as they are in good condition. Our technicians carry the tools and materials needed for the most common door glass repairs, so most jobs are completed in a single visit across Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC.
Yes, and that is one of our most common door glass repair calls. Sliding door glass replacement does not require removing or replacing the entire door frame or track system. We remove the damaged glass panel from the existing frame, measure for the replacement, and install new glass that matches the original specifications including thickness, tempered safety rating, and any low-E coatings. The door frame, rollers, track, and hardware all stay in place. This saves homeowners across Fairfax, Springfield, McLean, Centreville, and the rest of Northern Virginia a significant amount compared to buying a whole new sliding door unit. The only time we recommend a full door replacement is when the frame itself is bent, warped, or damaged beyond use.
If the glass is cracked, chipped, shattered, or has a failed seal causing fog between the panes, the glass needs attention. A single crack or chip in a non-tempered pane can sometimes be left alone temporarily, but it will eventually spread from temperature changes and daily use. Shattered glass and foggy sealed units need immediate replacement. The door frame is the deciding factor for whether you repair the glass or replace the whole door. If the frame is straight, the door opens and closes properly, and there is no structural damage, then door glass repair is the right move. Our technicians assess both the glass and the frame during every service call across Woodbridge, Arlington, Burke, Silver Spring, and the wider DMV area so you get an honest recommendation on site.
The cost depends on the type of door, the size of the glass panel, and whether the glass is tempered, laminated, or insulated. Sliding door glass and patio door glass panels are typically larger and cost more than a small entry door lite. Tempered safety glass, which is required by code on most doors, costs more than standard glass. Storefront door glass for commercial properties varies based on the glass type and frame system. At Advanced Window & Glass Repair, we provide a phone quote so you have a realistic price range before we schedule a visit. On site, our technician measures the glass, confirms the type and specifications, and gives you a flat-rate quote before starting any work. That pricing applies across all of our service areas in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC.
Yes. A broken door glass from a break-in is a security emergency, and we treat it that way. We offer 24/7 emergency door glass repair across the entire DMV area including Arlington, Silver Spring, Bethesda, Falls Church, Fairfax, and all surrounding communities. When you call our emergency line, you reach a live person who can dispatch a technician to your location the same day or same night. Our technician secures the opening, removes the broken glass safely, and installs a replacement pane to restore your door’s security as quickly as possible. If the exact glass needs to be custom ordered, we board up the opening with a temporary secure panel until the permanent replacement is ready. Your safety is the priority on every emergency door glass repair call.
